Part I: Forensic Phonetics
نویسنده
چکیده
In this part of our tutorial we will cover three areas. First we will position forensic speech science in its historical context. We will briefly describe the development from its modern beginnings with Voiceprints in the USA and Phonoscopy in Stalin's USSR to the present situation by giving you a glimpse of the advances as well as the controversies. Secondly we will present some fundamental issues in forensic phonetics research and see how our present knowledge can be applied in forensic fieldwork. In this part of the tutorial, the focus will be on human voice recognition and discrimination and how factors like memory, familiarity, language, disguise etc. influence these abilities. Lies and deception are age-old problems in forensic investigations. It is therefore not surprising that many people have tried to find ways of detecting deception. We will describe attempts to use the information conveyed by the human voice in lie detection and recent experiments using brain scan methods (fMRI) to approach the problem. In the description of these efforts we will also make an attempt to draw the line between methods, the use of which in forensics, can be justified on scientific grounds and methods which are speculative at best and outright bogus in the worst case. For each topic we will present a list of suggested reading.

Evidence evaluation for discrete data.
Methods for the evaluation of evidence in the form of measurements by means of the likelihood ratio are becoming more widespread. There is a paucity of methods for the evaluation of evidence in the form of counts by means of the likelihood ratio. Two suggestions for such methods are described. Examples of their performance are illustrated in the context of a problem in forensic phonetics. There...
متن کاملForensic Linguistics and Forensic Phonetics: An Introduction
Communication is the essence of human civilization. Life would not have been possible without this cognitive faculty. However, with evolution in civilization instances of criminal activities are also on the increase. This paper introduces one such scientific discipline which has the potential to provide an authentic framework for such identifications. It is called Forensic Linguistics. Each ind...
متن کاملPhonetic Analysis in Forensic Speaker Identification. an Example of Routine Expert Actions.
Forensic speaker identification is one of the most important tasks dealt with in forensic phonetics. The usage of acoustic evidence increases and at the same time grows the necessity for easy-toapply and reliable methods. The method should be consistent and straight and should enable an expert to make identification decision with clearly determined probability. This paper is to outline the rout...
متن کاملA Forensic Phonetic Study of ‘Dynamic’ Sources of Variability in Speech: The DyViS Project
DyViS is a forensic phonetics research project which investigates dynamic variability in speech from two perspectives: firstly, the use of dynamic (timevarying) properties of the speech signal for characterising speakers, especially formant dynamics; and secondly, the speaker-distinguishing potential of phonological variability due to sound change. In order to explore these two sources of dynam...
متن کاملOn the speaker specificity of hesitation markers
The occurrence of hesitation markers is generally considered to be part of the verbal planning process. It is also a feature which is of potential importance to the forensic application of phonetics if hesitation behaviour could be linked to individual speakers. This study examines a total of eight female speakers on three different days. It can be demonstrated that, even though results vary ac...
